Like a Prayer

What happens when your external reality is incongruent with your internal desire? When everything that can go wrong will go wrong. When relationships are full of strife and you experience setback after setback. Your perception of life becomes anxious. You watch your reality slip through your hands unaffected by your attempts to mold it. Your life 'happens.' Problems happen to you. Accidents 'happen.' Life is perceived to be directed by fate, by God, by the external. Your reality becomes shaped by your belief in an extrinsic design.

Magick counteracts happenstance by using a psychological spectrum to shape reality. Using the spectral shades of perception, belief, state, attention, and expectation an individual can affect his reality. Normally, the common reality bending magickal procedure used is Gnosis, but Prayer has an ability to utilize the same exact mechanisms.

The realization that prayer contains magickal components occurred to me during a recent experience with a Christian acquaintance of mine. I had confided in her, at a previous meeting, my current life difficulties concerning an antagonistic relationship and the removal of that relationship from my life. This current difficulty of mine not only affects my own emotional state but it has affected the emotional and mental states of a wider circle of people, extending even beyond my immediate family. My Christian acquaintance took it upon herself to offer me a prayer. I do not know if she felt a concern for me, my family or if this was something she felt compelled to do for her own reasons pertaining to her religious belief. She never revealed her reason for offering me a prayer. I accepted. I felt a genuine concern from her to help and it seemed out of place to refuse. It couldn't hurt.

She sat down next to me, crossing personal boundaries and touching me shoulder to shoulder, arm to arm, and leg to leg. Unaware at the time, our body contact had a way of diverting my attention to her and created a physical connection between us. She didn't start praying right away but began a brief conversation relating to me some personal aspects of her life. I can't help but think she did this as a way to draw the focus onto her to alleviate awkwardness. She asked me a few questions concerning my problem, specifically what I wanted to see 'happen' from the prayer. I gave her simple expectations; a resolution, improved lives for my children, long term awareness and outlook, and a return to a more calm and peaceful condition for everyone. She then asked if I wanted to hold hands, of which I assured her I did, and she took my hand in hers. With the knowledge of how hypnotists and pick pockets use touch to divert attention I can recognize how this maneuver might reduce mental and emotional resistance.

She began with a request to the Lord, what could be considered an hypnotic induction technique, calling on Him to listen to her prayer and bring his wisdom and love to the situation. If I had been of Christian belief I could see how this might have been a good method to induce an open and accepting state to encourage receptiveness to suggestions to follow. Then she began specific requests using strong visual imagery of placing angels around myself and then each of my children. Visualizing angelic bodies in wispy gowns of white, a circle of angels encamped around each one of us, altered my perception of danger to protection. My emotional state followed from one of anxious helplessness to warm safety, all based on a visual image alone. She continued the prayer in a more technical fashion, placing in my requests for a resolution and a more peaceful state with a matter of fact precision of ordering from the drive through window. Without the same emotional element applied to the requests this part of the prayer fell flat and was no match for my skepticism. At one moment she added in her own suggestion which did pierce through to my belief center, in which she requested that the emotional level of the situation be toned down and replaced by logical resolution. This unexpected suggestion by her fed right into my resolve and reinforced my new emotional state of hope and the possibility of achieving my expectations.

Even without sharing her same beliefs in Christianity I could clearly recognize the principles of Magick she was using and it made her prayer powerful for me, even though our belief system differed. What happens when your external reality is incongruent with your internal desire?
